A Boathouse evening to remember!

Future talk.

Last night was incredible. Not only was it the absolute perfect Northwest summer day (79 degrees, a slight breeze, dappled sunshine playing on the grass), but we were able to share it with some of our best friends in one of the most beautiful places in Seattle, Dale Chihuly’s Boathouse/glassblowing studio!

We were honored and lucky to have amazing speakers, including our glamorous Board Members April Sims and Jody Waits, and the exceptionally poignant Bill Gates Sr. The Summer Fellows were out in full force, and wowed the crowd with how amazing they are. And yes, the space itself wowed – a huge thanks to Dale, Billy, Kheira, Damion, Michelle and Rob (a former Bus intern and now glass artist) for making it all possible!

Check the pictures below, and watch out for video coming soon!

That's a lot of nametags...

A tad blurry, but you get the picture: gorgeous.

A few of the amazing Summer Fellows!

Thania and Tunny - they're dynomite!

I wonder what's over here!

"...and this is a pentagram..."

Care for a dip?

Many many more after the jump!

Science Fairs: New Innovations for a Better Planet

Science Fairs are cool again (were they ever uncool?)

Perhaps the next innovation in climate change solution can be found in a high school gym. And no, not from using the dirty gym socks, but from the science fair projects of high school students.

Science fairs are nothing new but they have come a long way from the exploding volcano or salt water ice “experiment” – students are now coming up with ideas to solve some of environment’s most complex issues.

Science! After the jump:

Writing for Hella Bus is rad.

this could be you

It’s true. I believe that so much, in fact, that I freakin’ work in the Bus specifically for the blog. I eat, drink and sleep Hella Bus. (Mmmm. Frosted blog flakes.) Much of my time is spent scouring the Interwebs for interesting stuff to entertain and inform myself with and Hella Bus means I can share that kind of stuff with all y’all and not just my friends. Who were on the verge of being ex-friends because I send them too many links. (Kidding.)

But for real, I love writing here. To that end I’m involved in writing a style guide for future Hella Bus writers. Indeed, I wanted to tell y’all about how much I love writing for Hella Bus not only because it’s true but because we’re going to add some powerful bats to the Hella Bus lineup. We want you, our dedicated readers, to be the first ones to apply for these prospective writing gigs. Consider this your heads up. Applications will get posted soon… be on the lookout.

Gabe’s Picks – July 9

Fostering

A traditional Gabe’s Picks post hasn’t appeared on the blog in over a month and I can tell that the masses are truly yearning for some more truly important music journalism.

Today, we have new Los Angeles quartet Foster the People who already have an MGMT like buzz surrounding them based on their breakout hit “Pumped Up Kicks”.  They personally remind me of Peter, Bjorn and John in an alternative, lo-fi kind of way.  When I first heard “Pumped Up Kicks”, the first thing that grabbed me was the infectious beat and driving bassline.  I thought it couldn’t get any better, but then the hook came in and I knew it would be one of the songs that I played over and over again throughout the summer.  To top off the infectious beat and incredible chorus, they start humming at the end and the song becomes even sweeter.  In all honesty, I haven’t even listened to another Foster the People song, because I’ve been listening to this on repeat for the past few weeks, but I’m sure the rest is pretty decent too.
