Legislator of the Week – Tina Orwall

Every Friday during session, the Bus gives its Legislator of the Week award. Nominations are culled from our homeskillets in media, politics, and the non-profit worlds.

There’s this little thing happening right now called a “housing crisis.” Perhaps you’ve heard of it. Homeowners are getting foreclosed on left and right, and renters are getting slammed when their landlords go under. It’s tough all around!

Representative Tina Orwall (D – Sea Tac) recently proposed House Bill 1942 which would give borrowers (aka those being foreclosed upon) some tools to make sure the process isn’t defaulting power to the lenders.

Her bill would, among other things, require the third party group involved with foreclosures to work on behalf of the borrower, not just the lender, let homeowners go to the courts to stop the foreclosure process if lenders are unresponsive, and (hey you renters) would triple the notice time required for tenants if their landlord is foreclosed on.

We like it because it’s fair, and it levels the playing field. Also, anything that brings renters into the housing debate is a step in the right direction. Hear hear Tina.
