Service Army?

In Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels’ State of the City speech, one of his central themes was the power of volunteer service. He called for 10,000 people to begin volunteering, primarily through a partnership between the City and the United Way of King County.

That all sounds pretty good, and the Bus is nothing if not volunteer-loving, but ever since the speech, we haven’t heard much about this 10,000 volunteers number. And so we got curious…

We’re not fantastic at math here at the Bus, but we can do some basic arithmetic (thanks cell phone calculator). The latest population estimates put Seattle at 594,210 people in town. To get 10,000 new volunteers would require a commitment by just under 1.7% of Seattle residents.

That’s a lot of folks! And you would think that if even half that number were joining the volunteer army, you would at the very least hear about it through friends, family and work. But we haven’t heard anything. Weird.

So we want to take it to you, the peoples. We want to know if you have signed up to volunteer because of the mayor’s call, or if you’ve even heard of it. Take the poll, we want to hear from ya.

I already volunteer my butt off, I can’t imagine taking more on.

How does that percentage compare to the unemployed portion of the population? How about if Nickels offers residents a two birds with one stone kind of situation?: 8,000 city jobs that are half paid work and half volunteer time. That way only 2,000 of those volunteering people would need to be employed elsewhere (or subsist off of family money).

The jobs themselves could just about anything, as long as they serve some sort of public service. I mean, we have people being paid to be human billboards for condos and fast food. I’m sure there are several thousand job types more beneficial to society than that.

I wouldn’t have time to do any more…oh…and I didn’t hear his speech. Sorry Greg-o.

The poll’s missing a choice: ___ Already dedicate a huge piece of my life to volunteering and don’t need any inspiration from the Mayor.
