The Proof is in the legislation

Senator Kohl-Welles - Proof for the people

Senator Kohl-Welles - Proof for the people

What, you thought we were going to say pudding? Come on!

Great news out of Olympia yesterday, Senate Bill 5629, the Proven Programs bill, was passed by the Senate with flying colors!

If you’re not familiar with SB 5629, this is one of those bills that just makes sense. Here’s the basic premise: Sex education should be based on facts.

That’s it. Give us the facts. Seems like a pretty logical idea, but some folks had to be convinced.

Senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles (D-Ballard) has led the charge on this legislation, and it shows. The final vote in the Senate was 33-14, a solid and substantial margin that doesn’t just happen on its own. Kudos to Senator Kohl-Welles, the other sponsors, all the Senators who voted for it, and awesome advocacy groups like NARAL who led the activist charge.

So what happens next? Well, it’s not law yet, unfortunately. The House Health Care and Wellness committee will take it up next week, and the whole process begins again. Want to know more about how to get involved with this? Contact your legislators, NARAL, or the Bus, and we’ll get you sorted!
