Last night, the Senate passed SB 5688, the Domestic Partnerships bill. The companion bill in the House – HB 1727 – is expected to pass as well, paving the way for, get this, domestic partners having the same rights afforded to married couples. Hell yes. This is a very good thing, and a long time coming.

One of the prime groups moving and shaking on this for years and years is Equal Rights Washington. When push has come to shove, these folks have been in the thick of things, getting it done. Credit also goes to the leadership and tenacity of many legislators, especially Senator Ed Murray (D-Seattle), who has been fighting for equal rights for years.

Naturally, there’s already talk of a Prop-8 style initiative popping up here in Washington State, to which the Bus replies:
