Voting rights restoration passes!

Popping bottles.

Popping bottles.

More good news out of Olympia! HB 1517, the Voting Rights Registration bill passed out of the Senate this afternoon by a vote of 29 – 19! The House will take one last look at it and make sure it likes the amendments, and then its on to the Governor’s mansion.

And what’s this mean? Ninety days after the close of session, every person in this state who is no longer “under the authority of the department of corrections” will automatically have his or her right to vote restored.  So the thousands people who have exited the criminal justice system can exercise their rights of citizenship – just like everyone else.

It’s a big big deal. Congratulations to the organizers, and thank you for strengthening democracy.
