Speaking of the youth vote in King County

Think of young voters as Nicodemus. Respect us.

Think of young voters as Nicodemus. Respect us.

Buried deep within a King 5 story on a recent County Exec race poll is an interesting stat. The poll found two clear front-runners – Susan Hutchison and Dow Constantine. In this crowded primary field, Hutchison is way out in front, with 37% to Constantine’s 20%.

It’s not exactly surprising – as has been hashed and re-hashed, Hutchison is the only conservative in the race versus four center/left candidates. What’s more revealing and interesting (to us, at least) is the breakdown by age. Hutchison has voters older than 35 locked up by a 2-to-1 margin, but among young voters aged 18-34, it’s neck and neck.

After the primary, you can expect a lot of those over-35 voters who supported other candidates to swing over to Constantine. Young voters, on the other hand, are the great unknown. They haven’t been heavily engaged by the primary campaigns – after all, it’s a calculus, and the money goes towards high-percentage voters. The campaign that earns the support of the youth electorate is the campaign that will emerge victorious on November 3rd.
