Outside is the New In

Fashion outsider Elly Jackson

On runways and in our neighborhood shops around the world, a new wave of fashionistas/os have come up on the scene-from the most unlikely of places. We would usually find these folks in the corner of the dancefloor or at the library, but now “outsider chic” is the new fashion trend.

I don’t know about you, but back in the day-okay just a few years back in school-I remember always looking at the popular kids for my fashion inspiration-and also wondering what makes them so much cooler than me. Perhaps it was because they had the best name brands and always looked as if they walked out of Seventeen Magazine.

This has all changed recently in the fashion world. People who were on the outside are now the pioneers. So get on your suspenders and pop in Revenge of the Nerds!

The best example is 22 Year old Elly Jackson, better known as the vocals behind the genius electropop duo La Roux. Haven’t heard of her, well her fire red hair should stick out for you-in more ways than one. Her fashion sense on the British scene has been imitated by flocks of young Brits-clad in stove pipe jeans, loafers, and menswear inspired looks. Check out this video below where she describes her rise to fame and the “twilight zone” experience of seeing mannequins at a London Topshop with the exact ginger quaff as hers, and get ready for the outside to be in.
